New Energy-Saving Tips
Electronics: To save energy limit your electronic appliancs to one(e.g. one computer, one TV). Also make sure these appliances have low power consumption.
Mobile Phone: When you set the alarm on your mobile phone you can safely switch it off(during the night) and the alarm will still work. This will save lots of power and also increase its battery lifetime. Warning!: This system might not work on all mobile phones so you should better check it out before doing it.
Lighting: Make sure you always switch off ALL the lights when you quit a room or during the night. Also buy only energy saving lightbulbs: CFL, Led or Fluorecent Tubes. Although they are more expensive the consume from 50- 95% less!!!!(Leds) and last much longer: in averages 10 years!!!
Heating: Although energy saving lightbulbs can make a difference, heating and insulation is the biggest issue. A better heater can consume as much as 50% less. By putting your thermostat on 19-20°C or 67°F instead of 25°C or 77°F !!!! you make huge savings and your environment is more healthy because microbes fail to develop. Also it is recommended that you switch of your heater during the night.
Insulation: Insulation is also a key factor to energy-saving. For Example: What's the point of having an energy saving heater turned on 20°C(68°F) if the window is open and its -20°C out( -4°F)!
Buying: When buying a new TV or monitor try to buy a LED screen because not only they are flatter, lighter, consume less energy and have a much better quality image, but they do not contain mercury, which is used in LCD and Plasma screens as backlighting.
Buying: The Electronic Appliances you should be very careful about when bying is the fridge and the electric cooker. These are the appliances you use the most and that also consume the most. So make sure they are at least A class for the environment´s and for your wallet´s sake.
Cooking: When cooking you can save lots of energy: 1) Always put the lid on the kettle so that less heat is lost. 2) Do not put a small kettle on a big induction plate. It is obvious that there is lots of electricity wasted. 3) By not burning your food (by mistake), you can actually save a decent amount of money (Energy+Food)!
Car: Before bying a car, make sure: 1) You really need that car. 2)It has a light impact on the environment: it is hybrid, runs on natural gas or just has low C02 emissions (under 180 g/km) and is efficient (less than 8L/100km mixed cycle).

Mozilla Firefox: Press Ctrl + plus sign to increase text size on your current Web page or Ctrl + minus sign to decrease it. To restore the original size, press Ctrl+0.
Google: Want to translate text? Go to Google Translate(translate.google.com), paste the text into the big field and select from the drop-down menu the languages you want. You can then switch the two languages. You can also insert URLs to translate Web pages.
Wi-fi: By adding a repeater you can easily and cheaply broaden the range of your wireless network. Just place the repeater halfway between your router and your computer.
iTunes: Want to make your songs non-DRM-protected? You can purchase AAC files(e.g. iTunes Store) burn them to CD, and import them back into iTunes as MP3s. To do that choose: Edit > Preferences > Importing. From the Import Using pull-down menu, click MP3 Encoder. From now on, all imported files will be saved as MP3s.
Restore Points: Always create a restore point using System Restore when installing(esspecially) or deleting programms. You will find the Suystem Restore tool in Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. In Vista (and Windows 7 I guess) Restore point are automatically created when installing/beleting programms or updates, so use this tool only to install programms you are not sure about
Security: Prevent browser hijacks and other Internet-related annoyances by keeping updated copies of free antiviruses such as Spybot-Search & Destroy, AVG Free Edition, Hijackthis and others on your hard drive. They all are freeware and help immunise your computer against potential threats.
Microsoft Office Word: You can count the words in a document with a single click by adding a word counter to your toolbar. Go to View > Toolbars and check Word Count. Drag onto your toolbar the small bar that pops up. Now you can just click Recount whenever you want to know your word count.
Maintenance: Clean both your disk drives and registry by using CCleaner or Tune Up Utilities. CCleaner is the best freeware for cleaning and TuneUp Utilities is a paying software but it has much more features than CCleaner and is worth the cost.
Folder Options: To display or hide the file extensions, go to Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab > Advanced Settings and uncheck or check Hide extensions for known file types option, then press OK.
Security: At least once a week, make sure your Anti-Virus is up to date and have a scan. A good Anti-virus should have daily updates and provide an almost 100% protection against malware
Prank: Take a screenshot of your desktop using CTRL + PRINT SCREEN. Delete all the icons on the destop(or cut and paste them in a folder) and hide the taskbar(Start > right-click > properties > taskbar tab and select auto-hide the taskbar). Then paste the screenshot on paint or other program and set it as background! You can easily restore the changes.
64 bit: When using a new computer under Windows 7 (Home Premium version and above) by installing your Operating System in 64bit you benefit of much more RAM (no more 4 GB limit!) so your computer is much faster. Additionally you can run your 32bit programs normally on a 64bit computer!
Game Demos: Instead of buying expensive PC games you can download game demos. There are many sites on the net where you can download them.
PC: When buying a new computer, choose one with two hard disks. This is very usefull because even if the computer crashes (virus or whatever) your second hard disk will not be affected at all! So you can safely backup your data in your second hard disk, so that just in case something happens you will not loose your data.
Wi-Fi: To avoid being hacked and having a slow interent connection because the whole of your neighbourhood is using your Wi-Fi (!), just switch it off. If you have problems disabling the Wi-Fi post your questions on Ilias.tk Forum.
Twitter: Tired of having to remember long links or having to comply with the 140-character limit. You can use the Tweak and Tk-it service that you can get from here.
Passwords: In password do not use dates (as they can be easily discovered), words that exixt in the dictionary or names, for the same reasons. Also never use as password 123456 or abcdef. Always use a password with at least one number and one special character such as p4ssw0r8!, but make sure you can remember it. Also never use the same password for more than one account.
Links: Always watch out when openning links that begin with bit.ly/ (e.g.:bit.ly/aBcD45), as they are not real links but shortened links that can just be as harmless as messages from Twitter or links to MALICIOUS LINKS.
iTunes: Hide duplicate songs accumulating in your iTunes library by deselecting Show Duplicate Songs from the Edit menu.
